Today marks 11 years since the passing of Surfline’s Sean Collins. And today, we celebrate the man who helped launch a million surf trips. Sean’s passion for the ocean began on his father’s sailboat. He quickly became interested in meteorology as it pertained to sailing and surfing. He competed in surf contests and sailing races, but was more explorer than competitor. His favorite part about sailing was bringing the boat back. He’d take his time searching for surf spots up and down Baja. One particular remote and isolated right pointbreak became the catalyst for his devotion to forecasting. He wanted to know when it would be good — and made it his life’s mission to find out. For 30 years, Sean pioneered the tools we use today, all the while being a devoted husband to his wife Daren, and father to his sons, Tyler and AJ. He revolutionized surf forecasting as we know it and played a hand in an immeasurable number of waves ridden around the world.
