Almost 50 years after Roe v. Wade established a constitutional right to abortion, the Supreme Court voted 6-3 on Friday to overturn the landmark decision. While Roe had permitted abortion during the first two trimesters of pregnancy, now almost half of U.S. states are expected to outright ban or severely limit access to abortion. Now, abortion rights will be up to individual states to grant, and some local politicians, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, have pledged to accommodate abortion-seekers in their states. James wrote on Twitter on Friday, “While other states strip away the fundamental right to choose, New York will always be a safe haven for anyone seeking an abortion.” Here, scenes from a protest in NYC’s Washington Square Park.
