Bangkok is more than one city. I rarely stay in the traditional Bangkok by the river preferring the newer city. But the riverside Bangkok is changing too with elegant new hotels (like @fsbangkok ) & great restaurants. Plus there are the beautiful temples, the grand government buildings, and the charming old city.
