Why are there so many stink bugs?
British Columbians may notice distinct brown bugs in or around their homes. If you crush or injure them they release a pungent, coriander-like smell.
Brown marmorated stink bugs are congregating in homes to find shelter for the winter, said Susanna Acheampong, an entomologist with the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture.
The invasive bugs are also a threat to B.C.’s crops, she saied.
Stink bugs threaten crops, orchards and backyard gardens because they eat apples, grapes, peaches, berries, peppers, beans, tomatoes and hazelnuts.
“What we think we’re seeing this fall is, because the fall is so unusually warm, the stink bugs are a lot more active — so people are seeing them more,” said Paul Abram, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-food Canada.
There are a few ways to deal with them, and destroying them is recommended by the province, along with sealing up your house so they can’t enter.
“Just use paper towel to pick them up. They don’t like water, so have some soapy water. You drop them in; they will die. So you can kill them,” said Acheampong, who added that you can sweep them up or use a vacuum as well.
