On this day three years ago, I finished the first part of my Camino having walked from Saint Jean Pied de Port, France and arriving in the square in Santiago de Compostela, Spain after 35 days. I remember having a funny feeling when I arrived there. In my head, I thought it would be like a big finale, but instead all I could think of was, what's next? Days later I would go on to walk more towards the coast to get to my first love, the ocean, and back to Santiago again after 51 days total. I used to wonder why many people come back to walk additional Caminos. I thought, the world is big and this is but a small piece. And then the pandemic happened... and then surgery happened. I found myself appreciating any moment that I could walk and be in nature, and that yearning to be around people from all walks of life yet share a common bond. I cannot put it into words to describe it if you haven't walked it, but those who have will understand how easily true connections can be made if you're a peregrino(a). It's not so much about the kilometers in your Camino as much as it's how much Camino is in your kilometers.
