King Charles’s nine-minute speech on Christmas Day gave indications about how he intended to reign:
• The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Duke of York were cast into exile as the King declined to mention them. Instead he highlighted the good deeds of his other son and daughter-in-law, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and his other siblings, the Princess Royal and the Earl of Wessex.
• In line with his pledge to be a “protector of faith” in general as well as being, for Christians, the defender of the faith, he referred to all five major religions in Britain.
• He showed solidarity with the most impoverished of his subjects, acknowledging anxiety and hardship faced by those trying to pay their bills.
