For whatever reason someone thought it was a good idea to install base cabinets without drawers. While replacing these cabinets with ones that have drawers sounds nice, I don’t want to rip out perfectly good cabinets when I can DIY a great solution and install my own drawers!
The tools I used for this build were:
Circular Saw
Table saw
Drill/driver
@kregjig Pocket hole jig
Brad Nailer
The dimensions of your drawer will depend on how wide the opening is on your cabinet, and how much space your drawer slides require (some slides are installed under the drawer so you wouldn’t need to account for this)
I then cut the base of the drawer 1in smaller than the total width and depth off the drawer, to account for the added width of the drawer sides. The height of the drawer will depend on what you need the drawer for— I chose to make mine shallow because I knew I wanted to store pots, pans, and baking dishes in them.
To attach the sides to the base, I drilled pocket holes in the bottom of the base piece, then glued and screwed on the sides. I then used brad nails to the joints to add some strength there as well.
Once that was all put together I sanded and clear coated the drawer and put the slides on the drawer as well as inside the cabinet. If you have cabinets with a face frame, you’ll need to trim out the inside of the cabinet to make sure your slides go past that face frame (depending on the style of slides you get).
Then all you have to do is slide the drawer into the cabinet slides and you’ve got a way more functional cabinet!! No more losing things in the depths of your base cabinets!!
