Drivers were found frozen to death in their cars and bodies were left lying in snow drifts as a once-in-a-generation storm wreaked havoc across America yesterday.⁠ ⁠ Temperatures plunged to minus 45C in parts of the country, with more snow on the way, as the “bomb cyclone” storm front stretched from the Great Lakes in the north to the Rio Grande on the Mexican border. ⁠ ⁠ Across the country at least 57 people have died, but eastern states have been the hardest hit, with at least 27 of the fatalities in Erie County in upstate New York.⁠ ⁠ Emergency teams in western New York have battled zero-visibility conditions and huge snowbanks as they hunt for stranded motorists. Volunteers with snowmobiles were called in to assist the search.⁠ ⁠ Kathy Hochul, the state governor, said Buffalo was like a “war zone”.
