Sometimes people ask me why editing takes as long as it does. Here’s why 👇🏼👇🏼 During busy season (spring and fall for wedding photographers in Texas) most photographers have a mile-high queue they’re working through. That’s at minimum 75-100 images shot per hour. You get the camera home, save the raw images onto dual hard drives and store both memory cards in an organized safe place until the gallery is delivered. Upload into editing software (Lightroom or Photoshop for me) and get cracking. Uploading and downloading images takes a long time! Now onto culling the gallery and choosing your usable images. This means selecting non-dupes, in focus or purposefully out of focus images and the ones that you want your client to receive. Next editing. Editing takes so long because in multiple scenarios you have varying lighting and tone. This is especially true during wedding days where you don’t have much time to change camera settings or place lighting to your advantage. I have to go through and reset the settings for each different lighting situation I shoot. Then move onto the heavy lifting: editing. Although an image may not be the hero image, I try to edit out most distractions if I can’t remove them in person. Scratches, abrasions, dents, imperfections, bright traffic cones and pimples. Bye bye! Then I straighten out, crop and tilt if need be. After finishing editing a gallery, I’ll take a day or two break to return with fresh eyes and ensure there are no changes that need to be made before delivery. Export the bulk gallery to dual hard drives, upload the edited high resolution images onto your online gallery and email the link to the client and vendors. This is with each and every gallery.
