Located in an older part of South Kolkata, the Seagull Books (@seagullbooks) store is one of the most beloved institutions of the city. Established in the early '80s in pre-globalization Calcutta, the small bookshop and publishing house survived—even prospered—through the Amazon-esque whirlwind that overturned the book world. It is now the only independent Indian publisher to own worldwide English-language publishing rights for books by authors as renowned as Peter Handke, Mo Yan, Laszlo Krasznahorkai, Paul Celan and others, seven of them being Nobel laureates. “This place reflects our style, our work culture, and the core idea that Seagull is a shared space open to all,” editor-designer Sunandini Banerjee says. In her office, just a floor above the bookshop, the walls host the digital collages she has made for Seagull’s distinctive book covers. Although subtle, it isn’t hard to see the parallels between them and the décor. Much like the bookshop below, no corner here is empty of art or colour. “You could say this is a giant collage we all add to,” Banerjee gestures towards the doorless office rooms. “The shelves and walls belong to everyone in the team. We put up what we like and lend to the assemblage.” Read more at the link in bio Words by: Parni Ray (@parniray) Photography by: Parni Ray (@parniray) #ADIndia #Kolkata
