IS AN ECTOPIC AN ABORTION? This argument over whether or not treatment for an ectopic is an abortion is a dumb one. It’s an argument we shouldn’t even be having because IT DOES NOT MATTER. Because the argument that’s being held in a public non-medical space does not alter the standard of care for treatment of an ectopic pregnancy. It should not matter. But somehow, here we are, & it does. It matters because some dumbasses decided that whether or not an ectopic was an abortion should matter socially & legally. These trigger laws are intentionally written to scare doctors and hospitals away from appropriate care, which is why we’ve already seen reports of dangerous delays in medical care for these life-threatening situations. Politicians cannot possibly legislate all of the nuance in abortion care, but they know exactly what they are doing. The word abortion has been so weaponized against us that we are arguing over whether or not a dangerous life-threatening pregnancy complication should be stamped with the stigma label – like a huge Scarlet Letter. Legislators & anti-abortion activists NEED you to believe it matters because that’s how they continue to control the narrative of abortion. It’s how they perpetuate the stigma of the word. THEY WANT THIS ARGUMENT. The truth is abortion is a normal term. It’s a medical term, and it can be applied to many diagnoses: spontaneous abortion, threatened abortion, incomplete abortion, complete abortion, septic abortion, induced abortion, etc. On the most basic level, abortion is the termination of a pregnancy. There are many other definitions – some include “intrauterine” or “nonviable” - we can argue all day over the semantics, but it’s futile as it won’t change our standard of medical care. Treatment of an ectopic ends a pregnancy. Leave the nuance to us. So no, Brendan, we cannot just change medical terminology because it makes you uncomfortable. We won’t change it just because outside of medicine, the word has been socially & legally hijacked & weaponized. We also shouldn’t have to qualify it like this.
