One year has passed since the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) deemed El Salvador responsible for the death of our client Manuela, a Salvadoran woman who was imprisoned for a suspected abortion and later died due to Hodgkin's lymphoma that went untreated while she was wrongly incarcerated. IACHR created standards to prevent women from being unjustly imprisoned again in El Salvador after suffering an obstetric emergency, yet a year later, no action has been taken by the Salvadorian State to implement the ordered measures. ❗ Salvadorans still face criminalization and unjust processes like those that led to Manuela's conviction and death. ❗ The draconian abortion ban criminalizes both people suspected of having abortions and medical professionals care for them. Abortion is not a crime. It is essential health care. ❗ Two women are currently being deprived of their liberty after suffering obstetric emergencies. Reproductive health and rights cannot wait. The State must comply with the measures ordered by IACHR in Manuela's case and release them. Tap the link our bio to learn more.
