Swept Away. 2022. Today marks my first opening night of a full production since my injury in 2019. There is a lot of doubt, depression, and anxiety that comes with injuries, and you always wonder if you’ve arrived at your last performance. I’m grateful that tonight relieves me of that anxiety and marks another opportunity to do what I love. We always say that we love our companies, and usually that’s true. However, this is the first time I’ve felt agency as a seasoned professional to contribute artistically to a project from the ground up (in a dance captain capacity), where there were no egos involved, rather only space for ideas, brilliance, exploration, and collaboration. It’s so awesome to have a creative team who jokes with you on day one as though you’ve been friends for 10 years; who brings hilarity and compassion into the room every single day; who recognizes the impossible covid circumstance we’re all in and hates it as much as I do.
