Today is United Nations World Environment Day. I’d like to take the opportunity to highlight one very exciting effort to protect the ocean that is happening right now in the Eastern Tropical Pacific region. The governments of Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Panama have committed to working together to establish a network of highly and fully protected marine protected areas. This effort will establish a corridor of ocean protection which will help ensure the safe passage for marine animals like turtles, whales, sharks and manta rays which navigate up and down the Pacific coasts of the Americas. It is my hope that these protections and this example of international collaboration will be expanded and replicated throughout the world. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.
