Last week I was pleased to introduce the world premiere of ‘Black Brown X.’ A new musical score composed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Henry Threadgill and inspired by the work of McArthur Binion and the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation.
This collaboration between McArthur, and his dear friend Henry Threadgill not only represents a beautiful articulation of the @modernancientbrown mission: to support artist-driven, interdisciplinary storytelling — but is also a testament to McArthur and Henry's nearly 40 years of friendship.
McArthur’s reputation precedes him. Not only for the beauty, discipline and physicality that he brings to his work — but for his confidence in his identity, and the clarity of his message. For not letting the world define him, but for defining his place in this world.
During the course of my friendship with McArthur, I’ve heard him often field the questions - how has Jazz influenced you? How has the music informed your practice -- especially coming of age in New York in the 70s — and he would always respond eloquently and directly: that he’s not influenced by Jazz — he and Jazz come from the same place.
McArthur Binion and Henry Threadgill, come from the same place. 🎶 🎨 💓
