Forgot to post this from my Mother's Day newsletter - wanted to put it here so I could come back to this moment in time....💫 Can I tell you how insanely weird, and thrilling it is to have two boys aged 8 and 10? I don’t get their jokes about a you-tuber, but they don't get why I have so many shoes I only wear once a year. I am, officially, worse than them at almost every physical activity. But, do you know how delightful it is to watch the child that you have span out of your body skate ramps throughout the village, or surf on waves you wouldn’t dare to wade in? Maxwell, my oldest, wears his school uniform to sleep every single night – he always needs to be ready. I’m working on making it to 11 am meetings. Dash literally corrected me last night when I was explaining the significance of Duchamp’s ‘toilet’ art to the table. “It was a ‘urinal’ mommy.” These two keep me on my toes. Weeks ago while relaxing in a mid-day Sunday bubble bath (why not?) they both thought it would be hysterical to “surprise” me and jump in the tub with me. It was, actually, both surprising and poignant! I knew in the moment that it was the last. And, for a second I wondered if it was appropriate or not, but only for a second – because I’ve also learned to take their lead in these types of things. Last night, I was told their “drip” was off and I needed us to stop our card game to shop online for some “attack on titan” merch, natch. And, well, “drawing the line” is definitely one of the harder parts of parenting. The actual hardest part? Realizing that your child is part of you, but ultimately their own being, with their own emotions and personality. In motherhood, I went instantly from being a child, intent on shining for my parents acclaim, to a mother, needing to gleam for them, so that they could shimmer... I know that “these are the days” and, you know what? I’m nostalgic, but also excited. When I say that every stage of motherhood has been my favorite, I’m not lying. ❣️
