They were hailed as the great documentarians of their age for their intimate portraits of the North-East of England in the 70s and 80s. Now, almost 40 years after a groundbreaking exhibition at the Serpentine, the work of Chris Killip and Graham Smith are being shown together again.
Presented by Augusta Edwards Fine Art, the exhibition '20/20' displays 20 prints by each photographer. These starkly evocative black-and-white images capture a period of rapid industrial decline, a historical record of a time and a place that also have a haunting contemporary resonance.
“The work has so much relevance now given that so many communities feel forsaken by their government. There is also a tenderness and hopefulness in the work that speaks of the hardships ordinary people face though no choosing of their own.” - Augusta Edwards
The exhibition is open now and available to view until 6 November.
