Yesterday 2 years ago I officially became self employed in the middle of the first lockdown, no long term plan, no real idea of what I was doing but what I did have was a dream to create a lifestyle that made me happy. A lifestyle that allowed me to split my time between all the things that I love doing; looking after my clients, teaching hairdressers, travelling for work and having more time for myself.
2 years in and I think I’ve finally found that balance but it’s taken me a while to figure out what works for me and what doesn’t, I’m still learning/growing every day.
Things I’ve found helpful so far...
- Learn to set clear boundaries from the start, with yourself, with clients and with the brands you work with. At first I said yes to everything and over worked myself, I’ve found that putting in days off that are non-negotiable has helped with that.
- Having the same salon days each week has created a routine for myself and my clients.
- How you communicate with clients is so important, I only arrange appointments over email so everything’s in one place and always in writing.
- Get a good accountant, mines my lifesaver and takes so much stress/admin off me.
