We spoke to @hassankurbanbaev about life in Uzbekistan & on the inspiration behind his work. You can discover his work on @jcdecaux_uk digital screens until the end of this week. What’s the inspiration behind the featured piece? I try to travel around the country and photograph everything that seems interesting to me. It was shot in rural place, in small village with amazing, beautiful people. We had fun and suddenly did this shot. For me, this shot can tell about Uzbekistan, where I live. A car is not just a means of transportation, but an important part of socialization in society - if you have a car, then of course you have taken place in life. In general it is an irony on the subject of values in my country. How does your heritage influence your creative process? I believe that today it is very important to rethink the place of the photographer /artist in Uzbekistan. He/she/they should be free in the sense that it is important for them to make something that could understand the country through their own view, and not what is expected by the state or others. Therefore, I feel more like a pioneer, like other Uzbek photographers in this space – “to photograph now and reflect on today”. What is currently driving your creativity? A lot of things - not only photography! Can you share one thing that you find interesting right now? Opinion vs information. Now we live in a time when information has become very chaotic and complex, sometimes it is very difficult to understand what is actually true and what is not and it confuses us more and more. It seems to me that the point is that we live in space where the flat information hegemony is receding, which allows us to learn how to work with structure of information by ourselves, also help more vulnerable groups to be more visible. #hassankurbanbaev #somethingspaces
