If you’re a young woman looking for reasons to be insecure about your body, your search will last you as long as it takes to open the Instagram app, to watch a rom com, to walk two blocks from the front door of your apartment to the deli down the street while men yell egregious things from the comfort of their patriarchal stoops. Once you find these reasons you will be reminded of them continuously. First by others, but eventually, with the right conditioning, you will effortlessly enforce them on your own. You will cover yourself, lower your voice, tilt your head further down towards the ground. Moments of joy will be reserved for private encounters. Moments of ecstasy will be denied. You will find yourself suddenly aware, yet equally ashamed, of all the power and influence that your body holds.
