My guest today is @KatherineMay_. Katherine is a best selling author who found out five years ago, in the middle of trying to walk the South West coast path, that she is autistic.
There is a common pattern of ignorance from the medical industry and general population when it comes to adult women and autism, which is epitomised here, by Katherine’s account of her decades long struggle for diagnosis.
This was a shocking and powerful episode where Katherine kindly and patiently tells us her story of discovery, the repercussions of growing up unaware that she was autistic, the ways she coped and struggled and masked over the years, the profound relief of being able to put a name and a community around her experiences, and how nature has become her best friend, in all its sensory glory.
You may have heard of Katherine's book 'Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times'. It became a New York Times, The Sunday Times and Der Spiegel bestseller. This episode is based around her brilliant book The Electricity Of Every Living Thing - which is her memoir of this phase in her life when she discovered she was autistic and is such a beautiful read. Really hope this episode touches you and can genuinely help some listeners. Let us know how you go x
