Today I had this funny thing happen to me. A contractor called me to schedule an appointment for a big project for the house. We discuss the type of work, confirm time and address. Then the question comes...WILL YOUR HUSBAND BE AT HOME? Me... thinking first it’s a cultural thing and since I never dealt with contractors before I am missing part of the process 🤷🏼♀️, ask nicely why does he need to be home. Pause... I am asked if I am the owner of the house or he is. I say both. The contractor says MY HUSBAND needs to be home to sign the quote. Me, even more confused confirm nicely I am looking to get a few quotes and compare them before yes, discussing with MY HUSBAND and making the final decision. The contractor insists maybe we can figure out a different day when MY HUSBAND would be home since he would get to decide who the job goes to and would pay for it...Then I nicely tell the contractor that’s a pretty big assumption on his end. Since I put in the request I assure him I am capable of having a conversation about the project and I do not need MY HUSBAND to be there for it. He laughs. Tells me he likes me. That I must be a handful for MY HUSBAND. And asks again for a day he would be home too. I ask him if MY HUSBAND called, if he would ask him if his wife would be there too, to confirm the visit. He laughs again. I tell him that’s what I thought too and that we are probably not a good match for this project. Then I hung up.
I’ve been running my own business for 4 years now. Managed budgets of millions of dollars. And funny enough I got quotes, on my own, from A LOT of vendors in the film industry. Somehow, no one asked for MY HUSBAND before. YES, we can handle our own shit and YES we can do it damn well too. We can make decisions for our own bodies, households, families. We can make money and spend it as we please. Fight the white noise. Do no harm but take no shit! YES WOMEN CAN
