This is not just a normal elephant, - in fact this is one of the last few remaining desert elephants in this world. Think of African elephants and you might picture them wandering among open grasslands or making their homes in forests. But in northwest Namibia, amidst an arid landscape of rocky mountains, sand, and gravel plains, herds of elephants have become adapted to life in the desert.
While these Elephants are the same species as the Africa Elephant they can appear leaner and taller due to their diet and have bigger feet than other African Elephants. The larger size of their feet allows them to walk with more ease across the very soft desert sand, an adaptation that is useful when you consider that fact that these Elephants have been known to travel up to 200 kilometres (124 miles) in search of water.
It simply blows my mind that the estimated population of desert-dwelling elephants within the main riverbeds in Namibia is set at approximately 150 elephants! We were extremely lucky to follow a herd of desert adapted elephants for 2 continuous days making their way down towards the coast. A special moment was to get really close to this single bull in front of the mountains while the sun was going down. The bull was cooling off from having a sip at the waterhole and we got to see him from a really close distance.
