Although the 20-year-old model and member of the Hän Gwich’in and Sičangu/Oglala Lakota tribes made her Met Gala debut in 2021 and can often be seen, with her traditional Yidįįłtoo face tattoos, in the pages of this and other fashion magazines leading what looks like a glamorous life, the reality of her community back home in Alaska is dire. “Food insecurity isn’t just affecting us as people, it’s affecting our animal relatives,” says Chasinghorse, who was taught how to hunt and fish by her single mother, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge protector Jody Potts-Joseph. “Our dog teams”—a mode of transportation when temperatures dip so low that car engines freeze—“eat salmon and get treated with the same love and care as we do,” she says.
