Chapter 7: The first time I worked with Inez and Vinoodh, I realised quickly they’re in a league of their own. A dynamic Dutch duo, they’ve spent a lifetime refining the art of their imagery. Recognised as giants in their field, they operate as a team in harmonious tandem and synchronicity. When faced with one of their powerful photographs, it becomes evident they're not chasing perfection, but truth. I remember our first shoot together in vivid detail: I stood quietly in the soft light that illuminated the studio from a stained glass window. I remember feeling the atmosphere it created was more of an ethereal glow than rays of light, seen long ago.That fell on her and then on me and everything in between. By and by Inez filtered in, and with mesmerising grace began deftly rearranging the set like a 3d puzzle. Holding her hands up like Marcel Marceau and closing one eye, she moved her forearms in a slow arc, thumbs and index fingers outlining a rectangle, until I too swung into her frame. A slight smile flickered across her when she saw my wide eyes blinking at her in transfixed awe. The speed with which I saw her observe the room’s contents (me included) and know exactly what the end result would be was remarkable. Within minutes she saw how the photographs would look. Like a sculptor who looks at a raw block of marble and sees the statue before hammering the first chisel, she effortlessly saw the room, the light, the props, and within a minute foresaw what she could create with these raw materials.
