A few words about my friend Paul. Me and Paul met roughly 22 years ago on Staten Island playing shows together in different bands. His shows were always captivating. You never knew if he might smash a guitar (probably one of his dads) out of frustration or kick out a band member during the show or who knows what.. but the most memorable part was that everybody in the audience always knew the lyrics to his songs and sang along. I was blown away by that. Around that time his brother Will aka @swivs_ told me that me and Paul should get together and help each other with some songs. We didn’t. But a few years later, and I don’t remember what lead to it, we were recording his first Paul & The Tall Trees record at then Dunham Sound Studio in Brooklyn. A word on the new EP “I Understand”. Paul’s a fearless songwriter. This record puts that on full display. When he first sent me this batch of songs I paced around listening for hours taken aback by the rawness of the performance and the substance of the songs. One listen and I knew Paul was going through it.. I walked the studio floor trying to figure out whose perspective the song “I understand” was written from. It was hard not to call him point blank and ask. I didn’t. Instead I started putting music to it as Paul had asked me to do. When I found out “I understand” was written from his then 3 year old daughters perspective I lost it 🤯 followed by 😢. That’s some Harry Nilsson type shit.
