(3/3) Two weeks with the new Leica M11. Link in bio. When viewing the M11 just in specs, I didn’t want to like it, my opinions were stacked against it before shooting it- unsurprisingly because of its $9k price tag and that its features all exist in other manufacturers certain 35mm plastic bodies, and those bodies internals don’t stop to the equal specs of the M11, they add on extras. We all know this. But as the days of casual image making ensued, this piece of German engineering changed my mind. Let’s ignore the price tag, like you wish friends could with food costs on vacation, and queue in more on experience, feeling, and memory. Visceral. The build quality you feel in the full metal body wrapped in leather skin, no sift or adjustment through the hands feels hollow, rattly, or at all loosely imprecise. The dive into smoothly manipulating all of these manual controls demands your own precision and thoughtfulness, it becomes a desire to make adjustments almost unconsciously, your eyes and mind one with the camera. Thus, one can only accompany that with a slower approach to framing and composition- if you’re going to take the time to become a master in settings, the output has to be of equal passion. Insane spec in frames per second and automatic adjustments are not what this camera is for, and never did I find myself wanting that. A specific tool for a specific photo MAKING journey is what I wanted, and never did I find myself wanting any other body or extra features. At this point, the 60 megapixel capability is just the red circle cherry on top. I cannot believe that my experience with a 1980’s Leica film camera, translates so perfectly to a 2022 digital powerhouse so smoothly. I want to go find images to make, I don’t want to be made to go take them. Thank you @leicacamerausa, @mensjournal, and @adamhurly for the opportunity of experience.
