August 28th, 1955: the day Emmett Till was murdered and whose body was found in Mississippi’s Tallahatchie River on the 31st. These photos are from his childhood home in the South Side of Chicago that I visited last year on this day. The second photo, which I find particularly eerie, is of a partially open door on the floor that him and his mother resided on.
In 2025, the home will become available to the public as an educational space about Emmett’s family story, murder case, and story of the Great Migration, which like tens of thousands of other Black families, brought Emmett’s grandparents to Chicago.
