Texture MATTERS In class I’m always preaching about texture. Texture will tell you lots of things -what volume to use -whether to chose acidic or alkaline color -how much warm/cool tones to add to your formula -how gentle or aggressive you can be There are many, many different types of textures and there is no one size that fits all but we can use a general rule of thumb in most cases. This post is referring to coily hair texture. GENERALLY speaking, coily hair can be most susceptible to damage, even before fine hair because the cuticle pattern is uneven. Most healthy straight hair has an even cuticle layer from roots to ends. Most healthy coily hair does not. The layers vary in number from roots to ends and there aren’t as many layers as straight hair. This means the hair will lift quicker, and needs extra care to prevent damage. The porosity can be high or low, but typically low when the hair is in good condition. My favorite way to color coily hair is to use my hands. It’s quick, effective, and it’s fun! Free handing will almost always have an organic look to it which I think matches the natural shape of coily hair so well. Lastly- if we needed to use foils for more contrast, I wound weave very chunky and space out the foils for maximum dimension. What do you think of this method? Let me know!
