@lilnasx for Montero (Call Me By Your Name) by @filipcustic A year and a half ago I got an email from @hodovodo and @filipcustic with the concept for the magical CMBYN visuals. What originally takes me weeks to make, was finished in an insane 48 hours and on a plane to LA. I got to FaceTime with Nas during the photoshoot (I had to mute the call to scream bc how is that real life?!?!?!) and then began the anxious wait to see if the image made the final cut. (Spoiler:) The photo did not end up getting shared in the lead up to Montero’s release, and I talk about this aspect of the industry often — the rollercoaster of emotions to have a huge opportunity and it not come to fruition in the ways you had hoped. But after all this time, a silver lining in the form of @hodovodo sharing the finished image a few days ago. Seeing it now and finally getting to show it to the world (that too during pride month 😮‍💨) is such a beautiful feeling. What @lilnasx did with this record and the imagery that went along with it was nothing short of triumphant and groundbreaking. It permanently shifted the trajectory of pop music + culture and to be a quiet part of that moment is a life highlight for me.
