So, last week I got to present at the Stephen Sondheim Awards (directed/produced by @julzkavs), a regional version of the Jimmy Awards, which is a national high school version of the Tony Awards, all of which recognizes artistic talent and achievement. As I watched the students passionately perform and celebrate each other, it reminded me of my high school experience and how meaningful art and theatre has always been to me. I have come very far since then with my own growth and achievement, and sometimes when you’re in the midst of the difficulty or inconsistency of work, or you experience how fragile, vulnerable, competitive or temporary the entertainment industry can be, it’s easy to lose sight why you began in the first place. But then @TheTonyAwards come on and suddenly you’re whisked away to a world of magical artistic creativity, magnificent performances, beautiful dancers, breathtaking voices, inspiring speeches, and you know you are safe to just be YOU and celebrate with people who are like you. It’s that world I saw and wanted to be a part of in high school, and I was so glad to have the chance to revisit that feeling (then and on Tony night) with these young, talented dreamers who may win a Stephen, Jimmy, or Tony someday.
