'Painting is the pattern of one’s own nervous system.' - Francis Bacon
🥓 Francis Bacon was born #OnThisDay in 1909. The Irish-born British figurative painter was known for his raw, unsettling imagery which focused on the human form.
Bacon’s portraits can be seen as investigations of the human condition as much as they are character studies. This is shown here in Seated Figure 1961, in which the identity of the sitter is unknown and difficult to make out.
They also represent a complex exploration of the physical space in a picture: the figure is both posed among some elegant items of furniture as well as being confined within a box-like frame. This painting device, which was one of Bacon’s trademarks, underlines the sense of isolation while also generating a claustrophobic psychological intensity.
