I am happy to be part of Der Greif’s ‘The Collectivity Issue’.
50 artists were asked to guest-edit a single spread within the publication. The invited artists juxtaposed one of their images with an image they select from the open call.
I chose this photograph - ‘Garden Performance I’ by Lucie Armstrong @looseyarmstrong
This is an image of her mother from an ongoing project about her childhood. She writes: "The image selected for The Collectivity Issue is from a new body of work that I am currently producing titled ‘Repossessed.’ The project brings together experiences brought to fruition through the process of psychotherapy and involves re-visiting and ruminating upon spectres from my childhood and adolescence. My photographic practice revolves around communicating aspects of life experience and the everyday, usually from a personal start point, and working with performative and collaborative methods to create a photographic narrative."
I like how Lucie has turned the picture on its side, making the outdoor lawn quite claustrophobic. The shadow of the mother walking out of the picture, yet attached through the cord. Nature, domesticity, women’s labour.
I have juxtaposed this image with my own ‘Cave I’. When we look into the cave we can see lots of human eyes amongst the stalactites and stalagmites, peering out from the darkness of the cave. These eyes were cut out from models featured in domestic settings in 1960s pin-up magazines. Here, the disembodied eyes form a feral flock, re-wilded, untamed and emancipated from their objectification within the pages of the magazines.
