“Messy” drinking on the breast or the bottle can mean a few different things, but regardless, it shouldn’t be ignored. If your baby is spilling from their mouth while feeding, it could mean: 1️⃣ The flow is too fast: when the flow is too quick, babies will naturally unseal their latch in an attempt to take a break. This causes spilling. 2️⃣ Their latch is shallow: If baby is not able to form a seal because of a shallow latch, spilling can occur. 3️⃣ Oral Motor Dysfunction: one of the most common reasons I see spilling is as a result of an oral motor issue. Most often, a tongue tie. This can be especially true if baby seems to leak on even the slowest of bottles. If you go through burp cloths and bibs while feeding, I recommend slowing the flow. If that does not help, or if there are other feeding issues/concerns, then definitely seek out an oral motor assessment!
