I think it’s appalling when certain magazines ask a photographer to do a shoot. Pay them literally nothing and then say, “you would have to sign our standard photographers agreement”. And then you read the lengthy, over lawyered-up contract which gives them the rights to your images for either “in perpetuity”or for several years. Believe it or not, big photographers sign these contracts to be featured in certain publications. Shocking but true. By signing these agreements it not only sends the wrong message, it creates further precedence for taking advantage of photographers. At some point photographers have to stand up for themselves. Honestly I’d rather waiter than have people blatantly take advantage of me. A first global rights, 90 day embargo after publication should be “your” standard agreement. Anything further requires your fee to go up. KNOW YOUR WORTH. Tell me your thoughts on this and which magazines haves these absurd contracts. Remember there are no victims, only volunteers.
