I’ve been thinking about this word a lot recently, and how the idea of a rebel is something that seems to hold an inherently negative connotation. Shouldn’t we want to constantly challenge ourselves to question? Isn’t that how we imagine and grow into better versions of ourselves and for our communities? The word باغی has it’s root in باغ, which is the Urdu word for garden. Its a word borrowed from Farsi, where the original meaning was ‘grown in a garden’, and reading that really shifted my perspective on what rebellion is rooted in. Change and growth can be uncomfortable and violent, but they can also be gentle and quiet and fragrant, like the sprouting of a seed in the wet earth or the uncurling of a new leaf as it stretches and settles into a new version of itself. Through the years, if I had never stopped to question what I was told to believe, never checked myself or never allowed myself the discomfort of growth, I don’t know what version of myself I would be today at 27 and I probably wouldn’t have liked her very much. As we enter new years and hit new milestones the only thing we can be sure of and should hope for is the consistency of change. It’s exciting and it’s terrifying, but I think the scariest thing is imagining getting older and nothing changing at all. So here’s to resisting control and convention, and always choosing to grow.
