This week we’re visiting the studio of LOEWE FOUNDATION / Studio Voltaire Awardee Solomon Garçon, an artist whose practice focuses on photography, sound and performance to create narratives around myths and the transformational body.
As we head into the 2nd year of the award, we commissioned awardee Josiah Moktar to photograph portraits of their peers and their studios for LOEWE’s upcoming fanzine.
‘What does a typical day in the studio look like for you?’
‘Well I usually drop my sons off and come in early. My studio is constantly under construction. Right now, it’s been painted black - you can barely see your arm stretched - it has become a site of creationism, similar to a mine, a womb, a bunker, an experimental club, a dark room. I’m searching for new narratives here whilst recording sound.’
Established in 2021, the award celebrates talent, individuality and original thinking within contemporary art practice. The first chapter of the award benefits seven artists with two years of support, including mentorship, a bursary and rent-free studio space.
