I wanted to create something that felt like home. When I think of Minnesota, I think of the lakes and rivers. I think of the moments I found stillness in the middle of the night sitting at a dock at a park in He Mni Can listening to crickets and the movement of water. Those waters carried me when I was sad. I think about my Grandmas who sat at that river. Did they let the sounds of the stream move them through their cycles of life too? I wonder how many times our rivers and lakes brought my relatives peace? I wonder how many of them looked up at the night sky, amazed by the beauty of all the stars? I wonder how many times the ones that came before me filled these streams with their tears? I wonder if these waters brought them peace and healing? The same way those waters did for me. The designs on this hat are like a love song I beaded for my home, the land of 10,000 lakes, Mni Sota Makoce, He Mni Can, Tinta Wita 🖤 It is an honor, to celebrate where and who I come from through art.
