Four years and hundreds of songs later, American Bollywood is finally out in its entirety. I’ve agonized on what to say about American Bollywood. So much of me is imprinted into this music; so much of myself and my identity has fused with this project that it’s hard to know where I end and American Bollywood begins. It can be dangerous putting myself, usually a private person, in striking distance with such raw vulnerability. So much of me cannot be seen here online, hovering only in liminal space. But now, for better or worse, it exists in musical form: a dipped madeleine into my internal life. It is profoundly scary, but cathartic to throw myself at the foot of humanity. American Bollywood marks our first independent release where we finally have made the moves to take back control of our music. This record is about identity, belonging, family, sacrifice, love; mysticism. It’s about mythology; the power of a story; about brotherhood; redemption. It’s about the good and evil in all of us. About the country and world we saw in the mirror of our deep isolation, and our fight to reclaim who we are; who we deserve to be.
