One of the most amazing things last year was following Monarch caterpillars through their metamorphoses to butterflies. I had found areas in our conservation area that were concentrated with feeding caterpillars. I witnessed one start to "J" and then later found its chrysalis. After that, I was hooked and started looking carefully through the grasses and forbs to find more - I was able to find nine in a small area. I only checked on them once a week and got very lucky on this particular day. I had this gut feeling that I needed to go out early and that they were going to emerge. I saw the chrysalids change color in front of my eyes as I waited a couple hours. I watched four of them emerge in the wild as butterflies and it was one of the most magical things as I could not have timed that any better and it was purely by chance.
