The Manton Research Center @ClarkArt in Williamstown, MA was originally designed by Pietro Belluschi and opened in 1973. As part of a campus expansion that opened in 2014, we renovated the original 1955 Museum building and the Manton Research Center with @Gensler as Executive Architects. In Manton we repurposed the former entry atrium into a new light-filled Reading Room to welcome scholars, staff, and the public at large. New mezzanine shelving contains the 15,000-volume library of artist Alan Sekula. The collection is both an archive that maintains Sekula’s organization of the material in his personal and workspaces as well as a visually stunning art installation that allows varying levels of interpretation of format and content. The original skylight was redesigned in collaboration with @RenfroDesignGroup to improve the quality of light and provide better environmental protection with a spectacular quality of light that changes throughout the day.
