I was apprehensive about posting a video on how I put on my make up or skin care because I was self-conscious about opening and holding things with my mouth. I was nervous about people seeing me struggle to open caps and lids or drop things and have to start over again. I was worried about my “get ready with me video” lacking the seamlessness and ease that seems to accompany videos made by abled bodied creators. The truth is that I usually can’t make a short 15-30 second video that accurately captures all the nuances of going through a self care routine as a disabled person. You don’t see me struggling to get the cap off my bronzer or needing a 5 minute rest when my hand cramps up. Nevertheless I hope I captured the disabled joy that ebbs and flows when I do my makeup even when using products meant to be used with two hands.
