#OnThisDay 146 years ago, influential Ukrainian-born artist Il’ya Elfimovich Repin painted this wintery landscape in his hometown, now known as Chuhuiv, which was then part of the Russian empire.
Repin was celebrated for his Realism. Notice how, even in this sketch, he carefully used warm and cool tones to capture the sunlight reflecting off the snow. He also included elements of contemporary working life, like the windmills at the horizon. Repin created this artwork following an artistic sojourn in Europe, a place that, he observed in 1872, “needs a flood of fresh strength from the provinces.”
Visit these cool tones and rolling hills by walking through Monet to Morisot: The Real and Imagined in European Art on the fifth floor, on view now.
🎨 Il'ya Efimovich Repin (Chuhuiv, Ukraine (former Russian Empire), 1844 - 1930, Repino, Saint Petersburg (former Kuokkala, Finland)). Opaque watercolor, translucent watercolor, and graphite on blue wove paper. Brooklyn Museum, Carll H. De Silver Fund and Museum Collection Fund.
