Color theory and how to use color to your advantage! With @rachstewartnz / In the late 1600s, Isaac Newton conducted and published a series of experiments involving prisms, light, and color. He invented the first color wheel, and the outcome of his studies formed the basis of our current understanding of color. As you know, color plays a crucial role in our world, influencing our decisions, mood, or raising blood pressure, for example. Thus, the kind of colors you choose and their combinations will impact the essence of your artwork. Here is where color theories come into play. Did you ever wonder why specific colors look well together when others do not? Several color combinations have traditionally been considered aesthetic, and in this series, you can find at least four of those combinations: In this regard, the first two images of this series have monochromatic color schemes. Monochromatic schemes use a single color with varying shades and tints to produce a consistent look and feel. You can use a soft combination of colors (image 2) or a more colorful one (image 1), but in general, both will look very clean and polished. Looking at both photos and their colors, which one do you prefer? The third image beautifully captured by @rachstewartnz has an analogous color scheme because it pairs the blue with some colors directly next to it on the color wheel. This color scheme is handy for creating warmer or colder color palettes. Then, the fourth and fifth images have complementary color schemes. A complementary color scheme uses two colors directly across from each other on the color wheel and relevant tints of those colors. The complementary color scheme provides the most significant amount of color contrast. And the last image of this series uses the square color scheme, with four colors equidistant from each other on the color wheel to create a square shape. This color scheme provides substantial contrast in the image - with the yellows and blues in this case. Thus, the theory recommends using one dominant color rather than trying to balance all four. Did you enjoy any particular color scheme? Which one do you enjoy using the most for your work? 🎨
