September is Sexual Health Awareness Month. Let's talk safety.
I ask every person I see, relationship or not, married or single, all sexual preferences, if they want to be screened for STIs.
Do you know why? Because I have never, in over a decade of being an OBGYN, called someone who had a positive STI result and they said,
"Oh, I knew I had that."
It's always a surprise. Always.
So that means to me that screening is more for the health and safety of that person and less about their belief in the relationship or health of their partner(s).
To be screened shouldn't be thought of as an insult or insinuation about a partner, but rather a check of one's own health. No different than blood pressure or cholesterol checks.
Now if you find something, then you flip tables. But knowing that you are negative for Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Trichomonas, HIV and Syphilis is your right.
Do you agree? Do you know anyone who got surprised?
Please share this to increase awareness. 🙏🏽
Love,
