The road to the Baltoro glacier and approach to K2 base camp was treacherous in mid June. Rutted and narrow roads, sketchy bridges, and steep canyons made the path seem improbable and fleeting. By the end of July, after weeks of warm weather and several storms we began the journey back to home. We had been hearing reports of flooding and washed out bridges but nothing prepared us for the journey ahead. After six car transfers, makeshift bridges built on the spot, tyrolean cable cart rides, and cars partially submerged in aggressive waters, we got out, greeted with hot showers, pavement, and chocolate cake in Skardu. Mountains are a powerful reminder of impermanence.
