I’m not anywhere near where I want to end up but making this video made me appreciate how far I’ve come. I was convinced that life without my arm, as a disabled person would be worse than dying—which is saying a lot considering I was on my death bed at 15.
Everyone says healing isn’t linear— I’ve seen and heard this so many times that it almost induces the same queasiness for me as “Live. Laugh. Love” especially in regards to the very real, heavy and complicated feelings that accompany disability, trauma and chronic illness. But it’s true— healing is often an erratic zig zag that’s unique to everyone.
At 29, I can say I’ve beat cancer twice, came out as bisexual and started to appreciate my own intersectionality instead of hiding from it, started my own business, landed a handful of professional modeling jobs and started the work to heal my cancer trauma. When I say these things out loud it’s almost unbelievable to think it will only get better from here.
