Safe to say I LOVE it ✊🏽 The Woman King is brilliant and saying so almost feels diminutive. This story in the hands of Gina Prince Bythewood @gpbmadeit is luminous as the director and her eminence is undeniable. The performances are masterful and a challenge to every artist to dig deeper. But beyond that, as a black woman who’s origins and ancestry ultimately connect to this place of Africa, it makes me so proud. So often the story of our enslavement is told from the perspective of Africans as victims. This story presents an alternate view- in this depiction we are villainous and heroic. We are presented as both complacent and greedy, defiant and peace seeking. It’s so nuanced and complicated and magnificent. I will go see this film again and again to gain inspiration and introspection. Each time examining my own heart in order to unearth what kind of hero I might be in this moment.
