The artistic workflow of an animal whisperer! With @thefrederikkejensen - Winner Best of the Week 28 at #nomadict / "I was photographing a boar when this roe deer ran across the field and into the forest. He stood in front of me, surrounded by ferns, so I carefully approached him. I managed to get close enough and spent 20 minutes or so in total photographing him. When it comes to wild animals, you rarely have the prerogative to choose the composition you want. I captured this animal just where it was. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, your subject will be comfortable enough for you to move around a bit and try to recompose the photo. If I have the option, I’ll always prefer to have my subject as far from the background as possible. In this shot, the deer was surrounded by ferns and trees, making the scene photogenic. It added a natural frame and depth, crucial ingredients to telling a story. As for the most crucial tool in wildlife photography, I would say that noise reduction is the most important one. Many wild animals are nocturnal, so you have to shoot at a very high ISO, and a lot of grain can ruin even the best photo. So, being able to reduce the noise in post-production is helpful. The final edit of the photo isn’t too different from the raw image. How I decide to edit a photo depends a lot on the raw file. But I always want my subject to stand out from the background so that usually means I desaturate the background colors and maybe increase the saturation of the animals slightly. In this regard, my favorite tool in Lightroom is the graduated filter. I love how it allows me to change one part of the photo without affecting the rest. For this shot, I removed a lot of the green and darkened it a bit. I also changed the white balance to make the overall photo warmer. I have always loved darker colors, being the tones and colors I aim for when I edit my photos. I love how the moody and desaturated colors tell a story." 🎨 @nomadict: You can learn more about @thefrederikkejensen's creative approach by reading the full article! 🦌 You can find the link in our bio! 📝
