Payal Khandwala launched her namesake label in 2012. Her aesthetic is global but with an Indian soul. Khandwala’s garments are made in India using handwoven silks, khadi, cottons and linens with a palette that is rich and full of color. Khandwala's biggest inspiration is women. "Where does all her inspiration come from? It’s simple, she says. She’s just been designing for herself! When Anjana Sharma, then director of fashion at IMG Reliance offered her a spot to showcase at Lakmé Fashion Week’s Winter/Festive edition in 2012, she thought: “I'm going to put 16 garments out there, clothes I would wear. If nobody wants to buy them, I'll have 16 new pieces in my cupboard!” she laughs. “There was no data, nothing to go by. It was really just play. There wasn't anybody telling me ‘Listen, a kurta with sleeves will do better than one without.’” At the time, Khandwala was a full-time painter who had just moved to Mumbai from New York. But she saw an opportunity, and she jumped at it. Her education in fashion held her in good stead. And the rest, as they say, is history." - Vogue India 🎥: @fashunwithviren #sanyfw #southasianfashion #southasiandesigners #southasian
